November Record Day - 22nd Nov - Collection of an Artist

I was hooked with CAMEL since the day I bought their debut cassette in the bargain bin (STORY HERE). The collection of the album here is almost complete considering the most recent album were not released on vinyls.

If you like PINK FLOYD then you will probably like CAMEL although CAMEL was much more technically profound in all departments. Less dreamy and spacey though. The reason people like CAMEL is probably because the way the guitars and keyboards intertwined together in between the complex (and sometimes, simple) song structures. They don't really rely on vocals. Most of the songs are long passages of instruments with vocal breaks here and there. They did became simpler, moving towards commercialization but never made it. I guess, their place will always be in the cult.

Camel are an English progressive rock band formed in 1971. Led by founding member Andrew Latimer, they have produced 14 original studio albums, 14 singles plus numerous other compilation and live albums.

November Record Day - 21st Nov - Favourite Record Friday

This is the album where BATHORY decides black metal is enough. Hammerheart was fused with traditional Viking folk elements. Basically, this album shaped the future viking metal music. Although this album was not the first since they even say that they took the idea from Manowar.

The song One Rode To Asa Bay was made as an official video that rotated for some time on MTV. You'll get to see BATHORY as a band in the video. It was the only official music video by BATHORY. I think the video should be expanded as a full blown movie.

This version is the 2-LP orange coloured records reissued and remastered in 2010 by Black Mark Records.

November Record Day - 20th Nov - Favourite Soundtrack

I don't have much soundtrack. And I don't think this is a proper soundtrack. It was actually a live album, recorded and then released in theaters just like IRON MAIDEN's Flight 666. But anyway, I chose this instead of IRON MAIDEN since if I opted for IRON MAIDEN then the whole entries would be 50% IRON MAIDEN. Furthermore, the presentation is much better with embed booklet some more.

Mine is the original 1976 pressing (2 LP), not the reissues (4 LP).

The recording of the album and the film took place during three nights of concerts at New York's Madison Square Garden, during the band's 1973 North American tour. All songs were recorded by Eddie Kramer using the Wally Heider Mobile Studio truck, and later mixed at Electric Lady Studios in New York and Trident Studios in London.

The album was released on 22 October 1976, by Swan Song Records. The sleeve design depicted a dilapidated movie house located on Old Street film studios in London, which was used by the group for rehearsals prior to their 1973 tour. [1]

Until both the album and the film were remastered and re-released in 2007, there were significant differences between the two in terms of the songs included on each. These differences were as follows:
In addition, of the songs that both the album and the film had in common, some of the recordings featured on the album were of different performances from those in the film. Other tracks which were recorded at Madison Square Garden, but omitted from both the film and the soundtrack album, included "Over The Hills and Far Away", "The Ocean" and "Misty Mountain Hop". A comprehensive analysis of the sources of the original album and the edits is available at The Garden Tapes

November Record Day - 7th Nov - 7" With Adapter (Large Hole 7")

I am sorry I don't follow the exact date but I am committed to finish this up. For now, I don't have any 7" with adapter. In fact, I don't collect 7" that much. I hate to turn the side up after one or two songs. So to substitute, I present to you the 2014 reissue of the IRON MAIDEN 7".

The song Sanctuary was originally NOT in the 1st album but later was put in on the 1998 reissues. Also take note on the controversy surrounding the artwork in which Eddie wielding a knife while crouching over the corpse of then British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

November Record Day - 8th Nov - Most Recently Purchased

I think this band is one of the Swedish metal genius. The other was Bathory. This album has everything that I need; death metal, variations, weirdness, some jazz/odditties, funny sometimes, skills etc. It is simply a death metal album out-of-ordinary.

Pan.Thy.Monium was a Swedish avant-garde metal band formed and led by Dan Swanö with several members from another project of his, Edge of Sanity. The group disbanded in 1996, after recording Khaooohs and Kon-Fus-Ion.

November Record Day - 6th Nov - Guilty Pleasure

A metal-head listening to disco? Well, that is what you get when you were born in the 70s. As we were growing up, disco music was huge. I remember during my schooldays, as we rode the school bus, the driver has always blasted disco selections in the stereo. So it was natural that those disco songs trapped in our head. And BONEY M was the disco act that ruled everywhere on that time. You can't miss the drum-roll intro of the song Nightflight to Venus. Consider also the deep vocal of Rasputin. Every sadness will go away with Brown Girl In The Ring. Excuse my while I boogie my bottom!

Nightflight to Venus is the third album by the band Boney M, and was released in July 1978. The album became a major success in continental Europe, Scandinavia, and Canada, topping most of the album charts during the second half of 1978 and also became their first UK number one album. Nightflight to Venus includes their worldwide hits "Rivers of Babylon" and "Brown Girl in the Ring", a double A-sided single that topped the UK singles chart and has sold over 2 million copies there.[2] The follow-up was another Boney M. classic, "Rasputin", in most countries also a double A-side coupled with "Painter Man", a cover of a 1966 hit by the band The Creation. In the UK, "Rasputin" and "Painter Man" were released separately as A-sides by Atlantic Records, both reaching the Top 10. "Rivers of Babylon" which peaked at No. 30 on The Billboard Hot 100 became their biggest US hit.

In Europe and most other parts of the world the album was followed in November 1978 by the Christmas single, "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord" backed with "Dancing in the Streets", another chart topper – selling over 1.86 million copies in the UK alone. Upon its original 1978 release, these two tracks did not appear on Nightflight to Venus, but they were included on later CD releases of the album.

There were four different pressings of the original Hansa Records vinyl LP, all with slightly altered edits of the tracks. The most significant difference was the length of the title track "Nightflight to Venus". On the very first German pressing it was 7:09 minutes, making the segued medley with the also extended "Rasputin" 13:48 in total, the second pressing 5:55, the third 4:58 and the final and also the one appearing on the UK and US editions 4:46. The timings given here are those of the 1994 and 2007 CD re-issues.

November Record Day - 5th Nov - Transparent Coloured Vinyl

The subgenre "crossover" was coined after the title of this album. It simply means that a hardcore band is making a crossover into metal. The two previous albums by DRI were hardcore-punk; fast and furious. This one was more melodic, slower with added metallic elements.

I think this album is OK. However, this transparent reissue (2013) is muddy. I think the mix was not done properly. The source might be digital. Need to find the first press.

November Record Day - 4th Nov - Band that broke up

DISSECTION was not actually broke up, it was disbanded. Jon Nödtveidt (founder/guitarist/vocalist) was found dead in his apartment in Hässelby, a suburb of Stockholm, by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a circle of lit candles on August 13th, 2006. Apparently he got too much of a dose in occultism? He was a member of the Misanthropic Luciferian Order founded in 1995 at which he described,
"MLO is a Chaos-Gnostic order, which seek the true light of Lucifer through the study, development and practice of all dark, gnostic and Satanic magical systems. Our goal is to create a synthesis between the dark traditions of all aeons, this way creating the occult keys that shall open the gates to the forthcoming endless dark aeon. My status within the order is the one of a full member of the second grade and a Priest of Satan. To become a candidate one must first of all already be an Anti-cosmic Satanist and actively practicing black magician. He/She must wholeheartedly sympathize and share the misanthropic and anti-cosmic values of the order, and then be ready to dedicate his/her entire existence to following his/her true will in accordance to the dark gods. Becoming an initiate is a long and hard process and can take several years."
Previously, Nödtveidt was convicted of being an accessory to the 1997 murder of Josef ben Meddour, an Algerian gay man. He restarted Dissection upon his release from prison in 2004. Before that Jon and DISSECTION had released two very successful albums, The Somberlain (1993) and Storm of the Light's Bane (1995). Two years after he was released, DISSECTION was on full mode again, recording this album, Reinkaos then touring.

His suicide was very unfortunate, since his last album has the potential despite some criticism from the older fans. Although it was not as technical and complicated as before, Reinkaos still maintains its melodic structure. The production was clear and playing was sturdy. It was a different album from the previous two. That is why I don't have preference to any of the DISSECTION album since each of them has their own strength.

November Record Day - 3rd Nov - Any Triple LP (3 X LP release)

I purchased this in Australia while I was doing my PhD. It was bought from an Irish in Ireland. Definitely one of the best purchase ever since the price at that time was considerably cheap.

One of the highlights of this live album is that Bruce Dickinson sang two songs from the Blaze Bayley era; The Sign of The Cross (from The X Factor album) and The Clansman (from the Virtual XI album). Of course, Bruce sang better (no offense to Blaze though).

November Record Day - 2nd Nov - Favourite "Sophomore" album

This album was commented in 2008. CLICK HERE (in Malay)

SCORPIONS debuted the rock scene with Lonesome Crow. Though the album strongly stands with the contribution of the renowned guitarist Michael Schenker (later joined UFO), it was not really the rock we know as SCORPIONS, rather a mixture of kraut-space-rock which was a big thing at that time in Germany.

It was on the 2nd album at which Uli Jon Roth joined to replace Michael Schenker that SCORPIONS really put its own identity. The music can be safely now be called as hard rock but in a different way. Roth took a considerable limelight in this album with his fiery and shredding guitar solo and even took the position of a lead vocal in the song Drifting Song. It was not a surprise considering that Roth was hugely influenced by Jimi Hendrix.

Collectively, this album was my favourite sophomore album due to the strength of each of the songs. Half of the album was filled with mid-tempo but complex rock tunes such as They Need A Million, They Need a Million and Drifting Sun and supported by the more ballad-sy Fly People Fly and This Is My Song. The crushing starter, Speedy's Coming was simply neck-breaking (guitar-wise) at which Roth put his gritty solo. And finally, the epic Fly To The Rainbow that was put in the last track - prog-influenced, emotionally-filled with the combined vocals of Roth and Meine.

While I mentioned about Roth all the time, one should not ignore the vocals of Klaus Meine who basically moulded the rock-singing technique for the world to copy. Rudolf  Schenker as the wall-strength ryhthm guitarist who was also the backbone of the band by writing most of the songs in the album. This was the only SCORPIONS album where drummer Jurgen Rosenthal played (later joined prog-rock band, Eloy).

Fly to the Rainbow is the second studio album by the German hard rock band Scorpions, released in 1974.

November Record Day - 1st Nov - 1st Record you ever purchased with your own money

Fahmi Reza had asked me to join this. I agreed. However, the problem with this is that I probably don't have all of it as requested and I might forget the history of it as I started collecting music (not necessarily records) since I was 9 or 10 years old (I am 39 btw). To demonstrate, I cannot remember what 1st record I ever purchased with my own money. To substitute, I still remember the first music I ever bought.

SAXON Power & The Glory cassette was one of the earliest music my dad bought for me on MY request when I was 9 or 10. The other included in the lot was SCORPIONS Blackout and KISS Creatures of the Night. Where I am quite a big fan of SCORPIONS, I was never a KISS fan. But SAXON, especially this album stuck in my heart as one of the HEAVIEST music I ever heard at that time.

I still think this is the heaviest SAXON record of the 80s. Out of 8 tracks offered, only The Eagle Has Landed can be considered as a ballad. And it not really a ballad, rather a slo-mo heavy. The opening track Power and the Glory fits nicely with the guitar riffs sounded like 2 Minutes to Midnight (Iron Maiden). The third track Warrior resembles a thrash metal without even knowing it was a thrash metal. The fourth track, Nightmare sends chill to the spine and the 7th, Midas Touch was simply superb crushing heavy metal.

Power & the Glory is the fifth studio album by heavy metal band Saxon released in 1983 (see 1983 in music). This is the first Saxon studio album with new drummer Nigel Glockler.
