CLASSIC ROCK Mick Wall & Ross Halfin special

Classic Rock is a magazine dedicated to the radio format of classic rock, published by Future Publishing, who are also responsible for its "sister" publication Metal Hammer. Although firmly focusing on key bands from the 1960s through early 1990s, such as Queen, Free, Deep Purple, Status Quo, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Metallica and The Who, it also includes articles and reviews of contemporary and upcoming artists it deems worthy of note, such as The Answer and Wolfmother. Despite starting as a one-off project it has become one of the UK's best selling music magazines, and attracts much attention and respect of many of classic rock's biggest names. It recently published its 100th issue and now has a higher circulation than NME.

First time baca majalah ni. Itupun disebabkan Mick Wall & Ross Halfin special. Aku tak kenal Mick Wall tapi aku kenal Ross Halfin. Siapa Ross Halfin? Selak CD METALLICA korang, dan tengok siapa photographernya. Sekarang, kenal?

Mick Wall & Ross Halfin sebenarnya sidekick - seperti yang diintro oleh editor Classic Rock ni - pada tahun 80an. Mick Wall sebagai penulis di dalam majalah KERRANG! sementara Ross Halfin adalah jurugambar rock paling renowned masa tu. So apabila ada event penting, seperti Rock In Rio ataupun interview dengan individu yang terkenal dengan ego ie; Ritchie Blackmore dan Axl Rose, Mick Wall seolah-olah menjadi the trusted people of the media.

Mick Wall punya gaya penulisan, macam baca novel. Bermula seakan-akan novel yang kemudiannya bertukar menjadi interview atau ulasan situasi. Gaya penulisan dia hebat. Kelakar dan detail. Dan brutally honest. Sekali dah baca intro dia, memang hooked terus.

Axl Rose (Guns N Roses) kutuk Mick Wall, KHAS dalam lagu Get In The Ring (Use Your Illusion II). Well, kalau dah baca tulisan Mick Wall, memang padan bebenor la. Dia ni BRUTALLY honest! For example, baca tulisan dia tentang Poison dan Motley Crue... huhuhu... sadis!

Eventually, Mick Wall dipecat oleh Kerrang atas pressure satu band yang mengatakan kepada ketua editor, "You'll never get anything from us, unless the 'problem' is removed". Sapa band tu? Guns N' Roses. And he was fired.

On the other hand, Ross Halfin pun sadis gak. Dia ni macam photographer ego sikit. Walaupun dia punya hasil kerja outstanding tapi at the same time dia ni pun ego macam artis gak. So no wonder, banyak band yang ban dia ni. Contohnya, band kata, kalau Ross Halfin ada ambik gambar masa show, band akan tarik diri. Dasyat dia punya pengaruh.

Anyway, cerita pasal IRON MAIDEN Rock In Rio, sebenarnya dia tulis overall show tu. Dia dengan Ross, dibayar oleh sponsor untuk ke Rio buat liputan. Mula excited, tulis Mick, bila dah sampai rasa nak balik. Kutuk habis kat Brazil. Panas kata dia. Dan penuh dengan petty crimes.

Ross Halfin pun ada tulis sikit snippet. Dia kutuk zaman Maiden masa tu. Pakai outfit warna-warni hehehe... dia kata, pakai la macam Metallica, all black ke. Aku rasa, dia pun sekarang kena ban dengan IRON MAIDEN kot?

Hajat dihati nak baca IRON MAIDEN je, tapi melarat keseluruhan majalah. Antara band yang Mick Wall kutuk = Poison dan Motley Crue. Dalam artikel Poison, dia tulis, dia dijemput untuk cover show Poison masa tu. Tapi entah macamana, dia dengan Ross kena kurung kat bilik persalinan sampai 3 jam. Show pun habis. Pening kepala. Kata suruh cover show, tapi bila sampai venue kena kurung pulak hehehe...

Interview dengan Ozzy pun best. Berkisar ketika Ozzy kena charged dengan Sharon (isteri) dengan tuduhan cubaan membunuh. Actually, Ozzy terlampau mabuk. So, polis datang rumah, tangkap dia masuk jail 3 hari lepas tu dia masuk rehab. Media pun tuduh la bukan-bukan. Kata Ozzy gila la, nak bercerai la. Ozzy pun jemput la Mick datang tempat rehab tu (250GBP per day) untuk ekslusif interview dan explain kat public what really happened.

Memang best ini isu. Novel cum majalah rock gitu. Aku tak tau apa cerita Mick Wall ni sekarang. Masa tahun 80an dia aktif dulu, umur dia awal 20an je. Start jadi jurnalis masa umur belasan tahun lagi. Macam cerita Almost Famous yang best tu.
