Advance Technology and Innovation Centre (ATIC™), Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP)

UTP sedang bergerak pantas.

Jika tidak, something is wrong? But for good reasons (maybe).

Moga mereka memahami.

Duit petrol yang mahal

Rasa macam air mengalir pula minyak ni, rasa saya ketika memandu.

Dah tentu amal ibadat soleh punya. KOMPEM.

Pergi konsert, demonstrasi, nonton wayang tu belum tentu.

Itulah perumpamaan saya. Sekian terima kasih.

Ulasan: RISING POWER Power To The People CD

Enterntainment to day max, kata orang.

SPACE GAMBUS EXPERIMENT Live at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS 090412 (with EiG)

It was supposed to be an event to be remembered. We are talking about Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS here!

Unfortunately, we were bombarded with technical difficulties and miscommunications. All this due to the simple fact that, the event management failed to understand what Space Gambus Experiment is all about. As I quote from Kamal Sabran, "SGE are not musicians, they are are noisicians". Noisicians is not even an established word yet.

But at least we can say now, "Been there, done that!"

The photos captured were during the rehearsal. We were not allowed to take any pictures during the actual performance. But I know Kamal Sabran is up to something.

SGE (all black) with EiG (in white)

Backstage with Kamal Sabran.

I love this shot!

The instruments played by SGE that night:
4 electric guitars
1 bass
1 electric gambus
1 acoustic gambus
1 drum machine
1 keyboard

SPACE GAMBUS EXPERIMENT Live in UTP 060412 (with EiG)

It was nice to be back playing with Space Gambus Experiment again after a long hiatus (me, not the band). The good thing about SGE is that they are an open-source kind of band. There will be a core members of 2-3 people but after that the number will change from one venue to another. Kind of like Transiberian Orchestra. Meaning that, all performances are unique.

I finished the 2nd industrial visit quickly then rushed back to Tronoh just in time to do one final rehearsal.

The venue was nice as it was outdoor located at the free area at the Chancellor Hall, UTP. The lighting was superb as well. Unfortunately I cannot find the right photos from the internet.

EiG during rehearsal (SGE played with them)

Feel like Mustaine + Hetfield kind of pose.

SGE aftermath.

I was "forced" to pose this way.

Listen to the live recording. But the correct way to really experience SGE is to watch them LIVE!

Ulasan: SUFFERCATION Day Of Darkness The Re-Awakening CD

One of the earliest Death Metal album in Malaysia is now re-released in CD format for the first time (originally released in 1992). It is in due time since the cassette version (the only version when it was released) has long been out of print. Not only it serve the old fans but also new fans who were wondering how they sound like.

Unfortunately, the quality of the transfer is really bad. Really really bad. It is as if the transfer was done directly from an audio tape or mp3. This is too bad since the packaging is really good with 20 pages booklet cramped with old photos, interviews, biography and some kind words by of its fans from all over the world.

Other than that there is a bonus track, featuring new track from the band. Actually they were supposed to record new songs for a new release but I don't think it is going to happen the last time I chatted with the frontman, Jeff Ilias. Again, this is another bad news from the fan since the new track was quite decent. Not only it has the Jeff's signature growls (more mature) but it is also faster with all the aggressions intact (the fast chugging ala-Deicide). Oh well, not all that we planned come exactly as what we want.

2nd internship visit

At UTP, the students will do their internship for 7 month - currently the longest internship duration in Malaysia. It runs for almost 2 semesters (1 semester = 4 months - UTP is running trimester per year). Internship program is considered as one of the main strength in bachelor degree program.

The intention is that once the students has completed their internship, they will come back to UTP as a new person. From a student to a pre-engineer. If they didn't change, I considered them as failures even though they passed on paper.

For the UTP supervisors such as me, I have to meet them twice at site. First during the beginning of their internship to check on the plan provided by the hosting company, to make sure that the whole internship program on that company will benefit the students to the max.

Then, a few weeks before the internship ends, another visit will be conducted (2nd internship visit). This is the most critical since the students will have to present their works. The site supervisor from the hosting company will evaluate them by giving marks. At the end of the session, each of the students will be given a certificate of completion.

Last week I went to conduct the 2nd visit for 3 days. It was hectic but it was fun as well. Other than just visiting, I have made contact with the hosting companies. Some may even end with a research collaborations.

UEM Builders (you know them because so many construction projects they were involved).

SapuraAcergy (Offshore engineering design).

Two students at Wawasan Juruperunding (they have keen interest in Pahang state development especially in Raub and its surrounding areas).

RB Consult (international bridge specialists)

Kor Jurutera Perunding (Kajang's best)

Sime Darby Plantation - Engineering Division (they got 5-6 months bonus last year?)

PETRONAS Operation Gurun, Kedah (controlling the gas pipelines in the northern region)

Impiana KLCC again

OK I know, is this going to be a blog which promotes hotels, you ask (again)? Absolutely not. But since I have been on and off to KL quite a lot this few weeks, I might as well put on something.

The room I got this time is the typical room. Smaller than the last one. I have no complain on the room but I realize now that the breakfast was dull since the menu doesn't change much. This is definitely a sign for me to request for a different hotel next time. Probably Corus or TheZone. Not much of a choice anyway since I am bounded by the rate (max RM350 per night? Not really sure but definitely not Mandarin Oriental or Traders kind of hotels).

Room rate is about RM330? Can't really remember.

Anyway, I was in KL again for a meeting with the guys in Petronas on a different project. Although I am not the Principal Investigator on this one, but on the meeting I have volunteered myself to look upon one very critical issue - which means, my task is not that easy anymore. Due to that, I am going to KL again next week to meet these guys. Yes, this time no more Impiana!

I have 4 projects with Petronas now. No wonder I find time nowadays runs very fast!

p/s: I am planning to do my industrial attachment for 4 months starting September this year. Hopefully in a Oil & Gas industry, specifically in a design office - designing offshore platforms or floaters or anything related. Anyone of you have any contacts with such company?

Natural disasters experience

I am grateful that I am living in Malaysia. Compare to others, natural disasters here are puny.

Last year, I was in Lehigh University for 3 months as a visiting researcher. I experienced two natural disasters; the Virginia earthquake and hurricane Irene. Even though the Lehigh area was affected, it was small. To tell you the truth, I was scared but at the same time I was excited. It was my first experience.

When I did my PhD in Adelaide, Australia, there were big floods and fire. The fire was worst (in 2009). It was called as the Black Saturday bushfires. Although it happened a few hundred km away, it spread fast. It stop short at the border. 173 people died with many more injured.

The pink coloured - close to South Australia (SA) where Adelaide is the capital.

We experienced a few tremors yesterday. Even with that small tremors we were already scared and prayed for our life. Compare that with others who were not so lucky. It is not really natural if you think about it.

SILVERIAN KULT Ipoh 28 January 2011

Seperti yang disiarkan dalam majalah KARISMA Edisi 21.

-----------------------

Pelik!

Keesokan harinya, doktor pakar jantung mula membuat analisis. Saya ikut sama duduk melihat ultrasound dibuat. Nyata jantung normal. Tiada lubang. Tiada kepelikan denyutan.

Saya tersenyum puas. Tiga band yang saya tonton malam itu menyelesaikan penat saya menguruskan sakit anak saya. A stress needs to be winded down - kata orang Tronoh.

Deepwater Well Engineering, Park Royal Hotel 26-30 March 2012

I attended a short course for drilling and well engineers on deepwater well engineering (the title). It was supposed to be a course for these engineers to bridge their knowledge of shallow water drilling to deepwater drilling. Deepwater means where drilling works are more than 500 feet. The urgency for this course is that, in the South East Asia region, deepwater drilling has started to grow.

It was a good course (although it can be better) for an outsider like me to have a perspective on the drilling activities and the related issues on it. I see some issues discussed in this forum can be resolved by doing research. Well, that was why I am there (with a fee close to RM15K). The other academic attended this course was an Assoc Prof from University of Stavanger, Norway who flew all the way from there!

If there is a blank paper, I cannot help myself from conteng-conteng on it.

My discussion group. The task was to analyze the Deepwater Horizon disaster report and to suggest preventive actions that can be taken to avoid the same mistakes in future operations. (L to R - Dusan from Talisman, Kopal from Schlumberger, Budi from Weatherford, Sijad from ???, me and Ismail from Shell). I am the only one who is a not a drilling engineer ;)

It was an intense discussions!

"My son has the same name as you so I have to take your photo for him..."

Group presentations.

There are also PETRONAS people, two of them graduated from UTP.

Kopal in action. Note I sat at the first row. A good practice as I was eager to learn.

The Professor. Jalal A Elhilal, a Syrian now UK/US citizen. Lives in Aberdeen, Scotland. Two MSc degrees and a PhD in Nuclear Chemistry. I asked him, "How do you become a drilling specialist when your PhD has nothing to do with it?" He replied, "I did the PhD because the French government wanted to do a research on nuclear related issues which I just took it but then drilling engineer is better as a job - it pays much better".

Nobody argued the best part of the course - buffet lunch!

Kasi Picah! House of Matahati 30/3/2012

Playing music is part of my passion as a human. Many others prefer fishing or golfing. There are not much different really. Only music is more fun (haha).

One of the perk of playing music, apart from the doing what you really like, is to get to know new people and personalities. It is one of the natural human being's traits. Perhaps, if anything fails, the last one to look forward to is getting to know new friends and re-connecting to old (or lost) friends. Otherwise, it will be a complete failure.

Space Gambus Experiment (SGE) is an open-source musical collaboration with core member being Kamal Sabran. I got this chance of playing together after missing so much due to other commitments. I'm not only getting so much fun, but also getting to know new friends, reconnecting to old-lost friends and the noise was good as well!

I don't know what's the name of the band but they have 4 didgeridoo players...

and a very charismatic vocalist who screamed, "KAU LALAI!!!"

Who's that...?

And Nik Jidan who sings folk music with a guitar AND a harmonica.

Airmas who sometimes went solo and sometimes with his band, Mentol 180 Watt.

The zombie of Kampung Pisang, Mamat Khalid with two English songs which are so old I can't recognize what they were hahaha...

Psychedelic rockers, Keladak.

Moog time bombs and other explosives.

First time live appearance and already blew the hearing apart! The Zooey Deschanel Intergalatic Copulation Machine, please get the CD out, NOW!

Jabatan Audio on acoustic set.

Multi-electric-contortionist, Eric Hausmann and wife all the way from Portland, Oregon.

Kuning, one man show. I am still figuring what was his message (I am sloooowww...)

The last performance was SGE. We started at 2am! No photos? I am hoping that somebody will post it on facebook since we are busy noising and psychedelic-ing on stage. There will be a part two of this posting if I can source out SGE photos.

venue - HOUSE OF MATAHATI
