Column test at Fritz Lab

This testwas conducted for the benefit of the Master students registered for the summer short semester. Two columns were tested. The difference between the two was one is with ordinary steel reinforcement while the other reinforced with 'spiral' reinforcement. The benefit of spiral reinforcement is to be able to deform prior to failure. Without spiral reinforcement, the failure is more brittle.

Some explanation from Prof. Pessiki while the test is in the initial load.

The spiral column being tested.

This is one big mean testing rig!

The typical column at failure. Notice the failure is pointed one specified area?

Closer view. Notice the 'bend' reinforcement. This is due to the load which eventually leads to the concrete spalling hence structural failure.

The upper part of the specimen.

Embedded strain gauges were used to capture the strain readings on the reinforcements.

At failure. Notice that the spalling of the concrete is more comprehensive and throughout the middle section of the column? The actual failure is due to the spiral reinforcement in tension. The failure is gradual.

Notice the spiral reinforcement that 'holds' the column, breaks. If we draw a line crossing the column connection the break points of the spiral reinforcement, it resembles a shear failure.

Another view.

The spiral reinforcement at closer view.

When asked about the total cost for the tests, Prof. Pessiki told me that it was about US$30,000. But again, it was paid by the students money who registered for the course. So, don't complain too much when you have to pay some fee when you register for your postgraduate degree. You will get back the benefit.

  1. ayat last memang best doc. anyway here are some Ques:
    1. is the failure occur starting from the spiral reinforcement in tension followed by buckling of vertical reinforcement bars?
    2. how about the spalling of the concrete?
    3. what is the grade of the concrete used in this testing?
    4. why is the failure is pointed on one specified area? what cause such the effect to be on that direction?
    5. what about in the middle of this column, is there any additional vertical reinforcement bars?

    thats all, TQ.

  3. zoe,

I just watched and just got the surface of it. Perhaps this document should explain better http://www.ncdot.org/doh/preconstruct/highway/structur/psp/2002markups/SpiralColumnReinforcingSteel(final).pdf

    ijau,

testing macam ni memang biasa untuk tau the strength and modes of failure.
