Visit from IIT Madras
One man show by Prof. V.G.Idichandy Ph.D. from the Department of Ocean Engineering.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is perhaps similar with UiTM in Malaysia. It has many branches around India. However it concentrates only with technology but according to him, it is changing. They are now offering arts related courses.
IIT is the academic institution of choice in India. They received applications from the brightest candidates but can offer only a few placing. This perhaps where it is similar with UTP.
One feature that strikes the most is that the lecturers in IIT does not really have an annual assessment such as KPI. The reason perhaps, the academic members before appointed the position in any department were scrutinized in terms of their academic background. Their excellent record must be consistent from the earliest education up until the date of application. Plus, they need to have a history of 3 years in a post-Doc position.
Hopefully, with the visit by the esteemed Professor, it will path a way between the Department of Civil Engineering, UTP with IIT Madras. The type of collaboration that both parties are looking at are research collaboration, joint supervision of postgraduate students and student's exchange programme.
