1. Satellite 15. Who saw that coming?
2. The way they tricked us into thinking the instrument sound (especially the drums) was one thing on Satellite 15 and then “bam!” the real sound kicks in at the start of The Final Frontier.
3. The line “Too close to the sun, I surely will burn, like Icarus before me, or so legend goes” in The Final Frontier evoking Flight Of Icarus from all those years ago.
4. Nicko’s hi-hat clicking and Steve’s bass from 0:25-0:35 on El Dorado.
5. Bruce screaming “Burn!” and laughing 1:50 - 1:55 on El Dorado.
6. The way you think Mother Of Mercy is going to explode at 1:25 after “I’m a soldier of war!”, but it doesn’t.
7. The way Mother of Mercy ends from 4:58 – 5:17 because it’s so unexpected.
8. The line “just a lonely satellite a speck of dust in cosmic sand” in Coming Home which somehow makes the song fit the album them even more by using the word “satellite” and talking about the cosmos. (This reminds me of the mask line in Face In The Sand which seemed to tie in with the cover art and Bruce’s performance on the title track live even if it was coincidence.)
9. Janick’s solo on The Alchemist because it’s just incredible. He described it as a retake and liked how it sounds like he’s “not going to make it, but does” at the end and I can totally hear that. The last bit makes me want to yell “yeah!”.
10. The wind in the background on Isle Of Avalon.
11. The entire free form jam section the middle of Isle of Avalon. OK, I admit, this isn’t small or subtle, but it’s so brilliant it must be mentioned.
12. The cool drums and effects on them at 4:10-4:11 on Starblind.
13. The very subtle pause, ghost note, whatever you want to call it in 5:38 -5:40 on Starblind. It totally changes the feel there and makes that part so much more memorable.
14. I don’t know what he’s doing, but the bass sounds from Steve at 6:10- 6:14 on Starblind are awesome.
15. The very subtle way Bruce’s singing and the acoustic guitar synch up and start going at exactly the same pace starting from 0:51 The Talisman. This is absolutely brilliant and I came out of my seat the first time I heard this.
16. The subtle voice(s) in the background at 1:47-1:49 on The Talisman
17. The strange guitar from 5:56-6:18 on The Talisman.
18. This isn’t small or subtle either I guess, but the entire section of The Man Who Would Be King from 3:57- 5:31 has to be mentioned because it’s breathtaking.
19. Davey’s “backwards” solo on The Man Who Would Be King.
20. The wind again on When The Wild Wind Blows. This is a nice touch that makes the song seem even more special.
